How to Convert Music on CD to MP3 with RealPlayer

There are many ways to change an audio file into an MP3, but one of the easiest if you’re wanting to record from a CD is to use the RealPlayer program. In three simple steps, you can convert as many .mp3 files from your personal music collection as you like. And even better, it’s free.

The below instructions are written using Windows, so if you have a Mac, the same basic rules should apply, although some locations and commands may be different.

Download and Install RealPlayer

If you don’t already have a copy, you can download the latest RealPlayer (now RealPlayer Cloud). Take note of the folder where you are saving the program, such as My Documents or Downloads, then double-click on the program’s icon and follow the instructions to install.

Change Settings in RealPlayer Cloud

  • Open the program and click the top left drop-down menu called RealPlayer Cloud.
  • Choose Preferences, then click CD once in the Category listing to the left.
  • Change settings in the right area to whatever you prefer, but make sure “Prompt to Save CD” is checked at the top, and that “MP3 (.mp3)” is selected beneath “When Saving a CD to the PC.” To create smaller Internet files, choose a lower bitrate in the “Select a Quality Level” box.
  • Click OK, then exit program.

Your RealPlayer Cloud Preferences box should look like this.

Change Settings in Original RealPlayer

  • Open RealPlayer, then click “Tools” in the top navigation bar and scroll down to “Preferences.” For some versions, click the RealPlayer button in the top left corner, then scroll down and click Preferences.
  • In the Preferences box, click CD once in the Category listing to the left. Change settings in the right area.
  • You can change anything here that you’d like, but “Prompt to Save CD” should be checked at the top, and “MP3 (.mp3)” should be selected beneath “When Saving a CD to My Library.” To create smaller Internet files, choose a lower bitrate in the “Select a Quality Level” box.
  • Click OK, then exit program.

Insert CD and Save

Insert the music CD into your computer’s CD drive, then wait for a minute or two. A box will pop up asking if you want to save the tracks to your library. Click yes.

Once it has finished saving, you can find the file(s) in your “My Music” or “Music” folder. Double-click on the new folder created, and you should see your new MP3.

Now you are ready to listen to it, upload it, or share it with your friends.
